UAE gratuity when service is under one year

No gratuity does not mean no final settlement. Salary, unused leave, notice and contractual amounts still require review.

Federal traditional gratuity threshold

The UAE Government's federal private-sector guidance states that a worker with less than one year of service is not entitled to traditional gratuity.

Service calculation matters

Confirm the official employment start date, contract end date and unpaid absence. A person close to one year should not rely on rough month counting.

Other amounts remain separate

Final salary, unused leave, notice compensation, expenses and contractual additions may still be relevant.

Check savings schemes and special jurisdictions

A DEWS or alternative Savings Scheme account follows contribution rules rather than the traditional one-year gratuity threshold. ADGM and other arrangements require their own review.

Questions to ask HR or payroll

  1. What is the exact service period?
  2. Were there unpaid-absence days?
  3. Am I enrolled in a savings scheme?
  4. What leave accrued during service?
  5. Are salary and notice calculated separately?

Frequently asked questions

Do I receive partial gratuity for six months?

Under the traditional federal formula, gratuity generally requires one completed year.

Does probation count toward service?

When employment continues after probation, the probation period forms part of service under the federal framework.

Can I still receive leave pay?

Yes, unused leave and other final-settlement items are separate from gratuity eligibility.
