Salary, leave and deductions

UAE notice-period compensation scenarios

Notice compensation is not automatically an employee benefit or an employer deduction. The direction depends on who did not observe the required period and whether the other party waived it.

Worked notice

When the employee works through the agreed notice period, normal salary continues and there may be no separate notice-compensation line.

Employer payment in lieu

If the employer ends work immediately but pays the unserved notice period, show the amount separately and confirm the wage basis.

Employee leaves early

If the employee leaves before completing required notice without a waiver, the employer may raise notice compensation. Verify the required period, unserved days and any written agreement.

Waived notice

A written waiver can prevent later disagreement. It should say whether the period is waived without pay, paid, offset against leave or handled another way.

Questions to ask HR or payroll

  1. What notice period applies under the contract?
  2. How many days were actually served?
  3. Was the balance waived in writing?
  4. Which wage basis is used?
  5. Who is said to owe the compensation and why?
